What is Shared Independent Living (SIL)?

What is Shared Independent Living (SIL)?

Shared Independent Living (SIL) is an NDIS support option designed for participants who require help with daily tasks and supervision throughout the day or night. SIL covers the support services delivered within a shared living home—such as personal care, meal preparation, and household chores.

While SIL funds the daily support workers and care routines, your room, rent, and personal utility costs are paid separately through your personal income or Disability Support Pension (DSP).

Who Can Access This Support?

Shared Independent Living (SIL) is available to eligible NDIS participants who require higher levels of daily support. Funding is allocated under:

  • Core Supports: Assistance with Daily Life (Supported Independent Living)

Note: SIL funding is assessed through an NDIS functional assessment to confirm your eligibility for home-based care.

Who Can Access This Support?

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

No. NDIS SIL funding pays exclusively for the support workers and care services inside the home. Rent, utilities (electricity, water, internet), and personal food costs are covered by your personal income or Disability Support Pension (DSP).

While SIL is typically designed for shared arrangements to optimize support resources, individual SIL funding options can be assessed by the NDIS if you have high complex needs that require individual accommodation.

Depending on your approved SIL funding, overnight support can include “active night” (a worker is awake and monitoring throughout the night) or “sleepover” (a worker sleeps at the property and is available if needed).

Absolutely. It is your home! Family and friends are welcome to visit according to standard household courtesy rules agreed upon by you and your housemates.

To access SIL funding, an Allied Health Professional (such as an Occupational Therapist) will complete a detailed Roster of Care (RoC) and functional assessment to submit to the NDIS for approval. Our team can guide you through this process.
